Manton Reece just posted a comment about a recent article on Macworld about an app from the ’90s called Hotline. Hotline servers let you host private file archives, chat rooms, and forums. Hotline clients let users connect to the servers. As I recall, Hotline servers were mostly used for sharing pirated softwre. I’m surprised it still exists, but apparently a few fans still run Hotline servers and have developed some modern clients.
